AIDS/HIV
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS is a disease of the millennium. It is a silent killer that is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which is known to hibernate within the human body when infected. It takes years for the full-blown disease to be observable and symptomatic. One can get AIDS three ways. One is through sexual transmission with an HIV-positive partner. Most often, multiple sexual partners and unprotected sex contribute to the spread of the virus. Second, AIDS can be acquired through exposure to blood-borne pathogens. For example, having blood transfused from an HIV-positive donor can immediately spread the virus. Another is using infected needles and syringes. Third cause of AIDS is through perinatal transmission wherein the mother passes the virus to her unborn child through the womb. To date, the cure for AIDS is still not available, but there are palliative treatments and experimental drugs to relieve the patient from the disabling symptoms of AIDS.
