Allergies
Allergies are hypersensitivity reactions caused by an exaggerated immune response. These triggers or allergens are substances that are generally not harmful and these vary from one individual to another. Common allergens are often airborne like pollen, dust, mould and pet dander. But food, drug allergies and reactions caused by insect bites, jewellery and cosmetics also happen. Signs and symptoms of allergic attacks include breathing problems, burning and itchy eyes, red swollen eyes, coughing, diarrhoea, headache, hives, itching of the nose, mouth, throat, skin or any area, runny nose, skin rashes, vomiting and wheezing. Allergy testing may be advised by the doctor to check for hypersensitivity reactions of undetermined allergens. Other blood tests immunoglobulin tests, complete blood count, and complement levels, can also determine allergic reactions. Drug treatments would include antihistamines, nasal sprays and other prescription drugs. However, for severe allergic attacks, epinephrine may be administered to save the patient’s life.
