Asthma

According to Medline Plus, asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airway causing wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. The primary cause of asthma is the inflammation of the airways that causes the respiratory tubes to narrow and tighten. The reduction of air passage makes asthmatics breathe with difficulty. Additionally, mucus production can further clog the airways causing coughing reactions. Asthma can be considered an allergic reaction to air-borne allergens. Examples of these triggers include dust, moulds and pollen. Asthma can also be triggered by respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, tobacco smoke, stress, food, drugs and other pollutants. Asthma may be common among children, but may subside when they reach adulthood. It is also a common respiratory disorder but it can be life-threatening when it becomes severe and left untreated. Primary treatment for asthma is avoiding known allergens and irritants. Medication includes long-term control medications or quick-relief drugs.
