Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is a type of malignant cancer affecting the cervical area of the woman. This may result to vaginal bleeding. Symptoms may be absent until the cancerous growth has reached its advanced stages. Metastasis may be present and can spread to other organs in the body such as the abdomen and lungs. Signs of advanced cervical cancer include loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, heavy vaginal bleeding and back pain. The main culprit for this cancer is a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection that triggers malignant changes within the cervical cells. Pap smear is an effective screening test and biopsy procedure to detect the presence of cervical cancer. Fortunately, cervical cancer among women can now be prevented through an HPV vaccine.
