Cholesterol

A lipid like, waxy alcohol found in the cell membrane and transported in the blood plasma of all animals is called cholesterol.  The name cholesterol originates from Greek chole- which means bile and stereos which means solid; and the chemical suffix –ol for alcohol. Moreover, cholesterol is an essential component of mammalian cell membranes where it is required to establish proper membrane permeability as well as fluidity.  Classified as a sterol, cholesterol is the principal sterol synthesized by animals.  While minimum levels of cholesterol are essential for life, excess levels in the circulation are associated with atherosclerosis. Lastly, cholesterol is synthesized by all the body cells but significant quantities can also be absorbed thru diet.
