Cold and Flu
A common cold’s symptoms usually last for one to two weeks. Although not a major medical condition, the cold and flu symptoms can be very distracting and may weaken your immune reactions. Children are most commonly affected by the common cold and flu because of their immature immune systems. But adults also get them when body resistance is down. There are more than 200 different virus strains known to cause the common cold. These include rhinoviruses which seldom produce serious illnesses except for the common cold symptoms. Other known viruses that may lead to severe illnesses include adenoviruses, echoviruses, paramyxoviruses and enteroviruses. Your physician will probably prescribe you bed rest and lots of fluid intake to fight the cold or flu virus. No antibiotics should be given unless bacterial infection is suspected.
