Colon Cancer
Colon cancer or colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that grows within the large bowels. These include the colon, rectum and appendix. Many deaths have been caused by colon cancer worldwide. Symptoms for colon cancer include change in bowel habits; changes in the appearance of stools such as bloody, mucoid and/or black tar-like stools; presence of tumours and other bowel obstructions. Risk factors for colon cancer include age, presence of polyps, smoking, chronic Crohn’s disease of the colon, low-fibre diet, heredity and environmental factors. Additionally, research has shown that alcohol consumption may increase chances of colon cancer among men. Diagnostic tests include digital rectal exam, fecal occult blood test and endoscopy. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy and other palliative therapies.
