COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD is a respiratory condition that affects the lungs and the upper respiratory tract. The common cause of COPD is the obstruction of phlegm or any substance within the respiratory tubes that make breathing laboured and difficult. The main cause of COPD is smoking. Other causes include occupational exposures such as carbon, asbestos and silicone inhalation. Air pollution can also cause COPD. Signs and symptoms of a patient having COPD include difficulty in breathing, persistent coughing, excessive mucus production within the respiratory walls, wheezing, chest tightness and tiredness among others. Treatment for COPD depends on the severity of the disease. In most cases, the doctor will give bronchodilators and corticosteroids to the patient. If breathing is difficult, the patient might be given supplemental oxygen or surgery may be required. The best management of this respiratory disease is to reduce the risk factors by cutting down smoking or by avoiding exposure to air pollutants.
