Drug Abuse
Drug abuse has been an unresolved social problem. The definition of drug addiction or abuse is not limited only to such ‘hard’ drugs as heroin where signs of tolerance and physical dependence in regular users, and painful or even life-threatening physical withdrawal syndrome when drug use is stopped are obvious. Further, according to psychiatrists, the term “substance dependence” includes both psychological dependence as well as physical dependence. Different types of dugs have different effects in the brain such that psycho stimulants, a large group of drugs encompassing cocaine and various amphetamines act in the brain to stimulate receptors that recognize the chemical messenger substance dopamine while cocaine works by blocking the inactivation of dopamine after its release from nerve terminals in the brain. These are just examples of some of the mechanisms of drugs. Knowing how these drugs act is important to discern why they are addictive. This will give you the idea on how they should be dealt with.
