Heartburn/GERD
Gastroesohageal reflux disorder or GERD is a disorder that is commonly known as heartburn. It results to a burning sensation in the lower chest with a sour or bitter after taste in the throat and mouth. Normally, food is transported towards the stomach through the oesophagus. Before it enters the stomach, the sphincters in the stomach open to accept the food. When these gates or sphincters are not closing and opening properly, stomach acids and pieces of digested food can get in and out of the stomach. This is called reflux. The escape of the stomach acids cause the heartburn, and these acids can irritate the walls of the oesophagus.
