Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a type of inflammation in the intestines. There are two major types of IBD: ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease.  There is no known cause of inflammatory bowel disease, but the immune system is suspected to create a triggering response by producing an inflammatory reaction within the intestinal structures. This disruption of normal processes results to diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Other factors that contribute to the severity of IBD are genetic, infectious, immunologic and psychological factors. A doctor will advise a candidate to undergo stool examination, fecal occult blood test, complete blood count, barium x-ray, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
