Lung Diseases
The respiratory system is a composition of tubes and airways that terminate with the alveoli, which are the basic units of the lungs. Our bodies have two lungs that inflate and deflate when we breathe in and breathe out air. But, the exchange of gases happen in the millions of alveoli found in each lung. Oxygen is needed in the blood to nourish the cells and tissues of the body, while carbon dioxide is exchanged as wastes and is the gas expelled when we breathe out air. Lung diseases happen when obstruction, injury or congenital damage happens in any of the respiratory structures. Difficulty in breathing and the compromised oxygen supply to the body are the end results of respiratory diseases. There are many known lung diseases from common to serious and lie-threatening. The most common disease is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the most common culprit for many lung diseases is smoking.
