Miscarriage / Pregnancy Loss
The natural or spontaneous end of a pregnancy at a stage where the embryo or foetus is incapable of surviving—generally defined in humans at prior to 20 weeks of gestation—refers to miscarriage or spontaneous abortion. Furthermore, miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy and the medical term “spontaneous abortion” refers to miscarriages since the medical term “abortion” refers to any terminated pregnancy, deliberately induced or spontaneous, although in common parlance it refers specifically to active termination of pregnancy. Meanwhile, early pregnancy loss refers to very early miscarriages or those that occur before the sixth week LMP (last menstrual period) or this is also referred to as chemical pregnancy those that occur after the sixth week LMP are medically termed clinical spontaneous abortion.
