Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of joint inflammation affecting men and women. Osteoarthritis is suspected to be a hereditary disease, but it can also arise from direct trauma to the joint. Weight-bearing joints like the spine, hip, knees and ankles are the most common joint areas affected by osteoarthritis. Normally, the bone ends of the joints are protected by articular cartilage. But in osteoarthritis, these cartilages become damaged or thinned out due to injury, infection or micro trauma. Aging can cause degenerative changes of the joint, and overweight people can also experience osteoarthritis. The main sign and symptom of osteoarthritis is sharp joint pain and stiffness. Sometimes, crepitus or crackling noise, muscle spasm or joint swelling is present. Treatment usually involves conservative measures like lifestyle modifications such as rest, exercise and weight control; medications like analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. On severe cases, surgery may be advised by the orthopaedic surgeon.
