Pregnancy and Childbirth

Pregnancy refers to the carrying of one or more foetus or embryo inside the female uterus. Moreover, pregnancy occurs as the result of the female gamete or oocyte (egg) that was penetrated by the male gamete spermatozoon and fertilisation or conception takes place. Through the act of sexual intercourse, or artificial insemination, the fusion of male and female gametes usually occurs.  There are a number of medical signs associated with pregnancy, including the presence of HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin, increased basal body temperature, Chadwick’s sign, Hegar’s sign, and Goodell’s sign among others.  Lastly, childbirth usually takes place after approximately 38 weeks after fertilisation or 40 weeks from the last menstrual period.
