Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia refers to a psychiatric diagnosis describing a mental disorder that is characterised by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. Further, schizophrenia is commonly manifested as auditory hallucinations, bizarre or paranoid delusions, or disorganised thinking and speech with significant social or occupational dysfunction. Typically, the onset of symptoms occurs in young adulthood and affects about 0.4–0.6% of the population. Moreover, schizophrenia is diagnosed based on the self-reported experience of the patients. Currently, no laboratory test for schizophrenia exists. Some studies suggest that genetics, early environment, neurobiology, social and psychological processes predispose schizophrenia and some recreational and prescription drugs appear to cause or worsen its symptoms.
