Sports Medicine
Sports medicine involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries brought by sports trauma or exercise. A team is usually responsible in the care of the injured person. It is composed of physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physiologists, coaches, and the patient. The most common sports injuries include those that involve uncontrolled rotational forces acting on the joint or body structure. Sprains and strains are examples of musculoskeletal injuries that affect the ligaments, muscles and surrounding tissues. Knee injuries are also common sports injuries because of the complex anatomic structure of the knee joint. Other sports injuries include compartment syndromes, shin splints, Achilles tendon injuries, fractures, dislocations. Treatment will depend on the location, type and severity of the injury.
