Stroke
A stroke or cerebrovascular accident is a medical emergency that causes death of the brain cells. The two kinds of stroke are ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke is characterized by a blood clot blocking the blood vessels from supplying nutrients to the brain. Meanwhile, a hemorrhagic stroke is caused by the rupture of a blood vessel and spilling blood over the brain structures. The symptoms of stroke will depend on the extent of affectation of the brain damage. The greater the area of the brain is affected, the more functions are likely to be lost. The symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of one side of the body, sudden confusion, dizziness, and severe headaches with no known cause. Diagnostic tests include computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging scans. To prevent strokes from happening and recurring, monitoring risk factors like high blood pressure and maintaining drugs for these risk factors are crucial.
