Thyroid Disease
The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system of the human body. The thyroid is located in the neck area just below the thyroid cartilage. Its function is to release hormones that control metabolism and growth rate of humans. Dysfunctions of the thyroid gland can either include the over-activity or the under-activity of the gland. Hyperthyroidism or over-activity includes these thyroid diseases: Graves disease, toxic thyroid nodule, Plummer’s disease, hashitoxicosis, De Quervain’s thyroiditis. Hypothyroidism includes Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Ord’s thyroiditis, postoperative hypothyroidism, postpartum thyroiditis, silent thryoiditis, acute thyroiditis, iatrogenic hypothyroidism and euthyroid sick syndrome. Anatomical problems, such as goiter, may also be classified as a thyroid disease. Tumours caused by adenoma or cancer can also grow around the thyroid area.
