A common type of strength training for developing the strength and size of skeletal muscles is weight training. Using the force of gravity in the form of dumbbells or weight bars, the concept of weight training is to oppose the force generated by muscle through eccentric or concentric contraction. In addition, specialised equipment is used to target specific muscle groups and types of movement. Lastly, the basic principles of weight training, generally involve a manipulation of the number of repetitions, sets, tempo, exercise types, and weight moved; and these cause desired increases in strength, endurance, size, as well as shape.
